Short answer: in British Columbia the marketing questions split by geography. The southwest coast, the Interior and the North have different winters, and that changes when demand arrives and what customers search for. On top of that, recent changes to rebates and trade certification affect what you should say in your advertising.
This is the province we know best, because we're headquartered in Vancouver.
What does the BC trades market look like?
Short answer: a large, crowded Lower Mainland, a busy Vancouver Island, and smaller regional markets in the Okanagan and the North where reputation travels fast.
The biggest municipalities, Vancouver, Surrey and Burnaby, sit side by side, so a plumber or electrician can serve a dense area within a short drive. That density makes competition for Google's map results fierce. Kelowna and the wider Okanagan behave like a separate market with a stronger seasonal swing, while Saanich and the rest of Greater Victoria have their own buyers and search habits.
What I'd tell an owner: decide which communities you can serve profitably, and build pages and campaigns for those, not for "British Columbia".
How do climate and season shape marketing here?
Short answer: on the coast, rain and mild winters keep demand steadier; in the Interior and North, cold winters create a sharper heating rush.
That has practical consequences. A roofing company in Vancouver sees leak calls through the wet months, while one in Prince George has a shorter outdoor season. Heating trades on the coast are dealing with a market where, according to Statistics Canada, 42% of BC households heated mainly with natural gas and 36% with electricity in 2023, so heat pump and gas questions both come up.
Plan ad budgets so they rise a few weeks before your busy months, and use slower months to build service pages and reviews.
Which regulators should a BC trades business know?
Short answer: Technical Safety BC, SkilledTradesBC and WorkSafeBC are the three names customers and staff are most likely to recognize.
- Technical Safety BC licenses gas and electrical contractors and oversees equipment such as boilers and refrigeration systems.
- SkilledTradesBC runs certification. Since Skilled Trades Certification came in, several electrical and mechanical trades, including gasfitters and construction electricians, require certification to work. The certification page has the current list.
- WorkSafeBC handles workplace safety and insurance.
For marketing, the point is simple: if you hold a licence or certification buyers care about, say so clearly on your site and profile. Questions about what you need belong with the regulator, not with us.
Which programs do BC customers ask about?
Short answer: as of October 2026, mostly CleanBC Better Homes and the federal no-cost retrofit program delivered through BC Hydro and FortisBC.
- The CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program offers income-qualified rebates, but its rules changed for invoices dated on or after July 6, 2026. Some rebates were removed and eligibility narrowed in places.
- A federal agreement announced on June 29, 2026 funds no-cost retrofits for lower-income households, delivered by BC Hydro and FortisBC.
My advice: if you mention any program in ads or on your site, date it, link the official page, and remind customers to confirm with the administrator. An out-of-date rebate claim is a fast way to lose trust.
How would I approach marketing for a BC trades business?
Short answer: tight geography, strong local pages and an honest rebate page that you keep current.
- Define your service area by drive time and build a page for each community where you genuinely work.
- Fix your Google Business Profile, especially categories and service areas. See local search.
- Split ad campaigns by region so coastal and Interior budgets don't compete. See paid ads.
- Keep one dated page explaining current programs, and update it whenever they change.

Frequently asked questions
Should I advertise CleanBC rebates on my website?
Only with care. Rules for the Energy Savings Program are different for any invoice dated July 6, 2026 or later, and a few rebates no longer exist. If you mention a program, link the official page, date your statement and tell customers to confirm eligibility with the administrator.
Is one BC-wide campaign enough?
Rarely. Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island customers behave differently from Interior and northern customers, mostly because of the length and severity of winter. We usually split campaigns and pages by region.
Do you advise on Technical Safety BC licensing?
No. We link to Technical Safety BC and SkilledTradesBC so you and your customers can check the rules directly. Licensing and permit questions belong with them.
