Short answer: when a homeowner searches for your trade, Google mostly shows the businesses it believes are close, relevant and well regarded. Local search work makes sure Google has every reason to believe that about you, for the services you most want to sell.
Why does my competitor show up on the map and I don't?
Short answer: usually some mix of three things. Their profile is more complete, their site explains each service more clearly, and they have more recent reviews.
Distance matters too, and you can't change where the searcher is standing. But in most of the audits I've done for trades businesses, the gap comes down to things the owner could fix:
- the primary category on the profile is too broad or wrong
- services are missing from the profile or the website
- the business name, phone and address differ between the website, the profile and directories
- reviews stopped arriving months ago
- the website has one "Services" page instead of a page per service
Who is this service for?
Short answer: trades that win work from people searching nearby, which is most of them.
It suits plumbers, electricians, HVAC companies, roofers, locksmiths, garage door companies, pest control, appliance repair and similar businesses where the customer wants someone close and available. It also works for renovation trades, though their buyers compare more slowly, so reviews and project pages carry more weight.
What's included?
Short answer: the profile, the pages behind it, the reviews and the details that tie them together.
- Google Business Profile. Categories, services, service areas, hours, photos, products and regular posts. Duplicates and old listings cleaned up.
- Service pages. A clear page for each service you want to sell, written to answer the buyer's real questions.
- Area pages. Pages for the communities you serve, but only where there is genuinely local detail to say.
- Reviews routine. A simple, honest way to ask every satisfied customer for a review, and a habit of replying to every review.
- Citations. Consistent business details on the directories that matter in your province.
- Reporting. Calls, direction requests and website visits from the profile, every month.
How long does it take?
Short answer: expect visible movement within the first quarter and steadier gains over six to twelve months.
| Period | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| Weeks 1–4 | Profile fixed, tracking added, the worst inconsistencies corrected |
| Months 2–3 | New service pages live, review routine running |
| Months 4–12 | Rankings and calls build for more services and areas |
For context, Roma Heating & Cooling saw 400% organic traffic growth in 12 months. That is a result from our HVAC work, and it shows the time frame more than a promise about your trade.
How do we measure results?
Short answer: by calls and enquiries that came from Google's local results and became jobs.
Rankings are worth watching but they vary by where the searcher is, so a single "position" is misleading. We report profile calls, website calls from organic visitors and booked jobs where your records let us match them. The tracking guide covers how.
Does local search work for every trade?
Short answer: it works best where customers want someone nearby, and less well where they'll travel or wait for a specialist.
For most home-service trades, distance and trust drive the choice, so local search pays well. For rare specialties, broader content and referrals may matter as much.
What mistakes should I avoid?
Short answer: the shortcuts that look clever and end in a suspended profile or a useless website.
- Adding keywords to your business name. Use your real business name. Stuffing services into it risks the profile.
- Fake or bought reviews. Apart from being dishonest, they can lead to removed reviews and a damaged profile.
- A virtual office address. If customers can't visit, hide the address and list service areas instead.
- Copy-and-paste town pages. Write fewer, better pages.
- Ignoring the phone. Map visibility is wasted if calls go unanswered.

Frequently asked questions
How long before local search shows results?
Profile clean-up can change things within weeks, but service pages and reviews usually take several months to build momentum. We set expectations by service and area rather than promising a ranking.
Can you get me into the top three on the map?
Nobody can honestly promise a map position. Distance from the searcher, relevance and prominence all play a part. What we can do is fix everything within your control and track calls from the profile month by month.
I work from home. Can I still have a Google Business Profile?
Yes. Many trades run as service-area businesses and hide their home address. The profile then shows the areas you serve rather than a street location.
Do I need a page for every town?
Only for towns where you genuinely work and have something specific to say. Thin pages with the town name swapped in tend to do little, and they make the site worse for real visitors.
